Before I wrote books and blog posts, I was a journalist. My career began with work experience, aged 15, on my local newspaper. I returned as cub reporter after studying for a degree in communication studies, and trained on the job for a diploma in journalism.
A bit later, I moved to the Southampton-based Solent News Agency, where I helped to build up its fledgling features department. On moving to the smoke, I shifted for a while at Woman, Best, That’s Life and Sunday magazine, before landing a staff writer’s job at Woman, swiftly followed by a promotion to commissioning editor. I left to pursue a freelance career after having my first daughter in 2001, writing features for national newspapers like the Mail, the Express and the Times, and a range of magazines such as Woman, Best, and Red. In 2007, I pitched an idea to White Ladder Press and my first book, Cool Calm Parent was born. Around the same time, I was asked by the fabulous folk at Netmums and their publishers, Headline, to write Toddling to Ten for them.
I’ve since written a further eight books, all with a parenting theme. And all rather ironic, really, ‘cos I sure don’t feel like no parenting expert – which is why I started my blog: the aim is to offer an honest snapshot of my own family life, the odd piece of friendly advice, perhaps, and random thoughts about what crops up in the headlines.
Anyhoo, here are a few nice things people I’ve worked with have said about me. Aw, shucks.
“Hollie is not only reliable, efficient and a real pleasure to work with, she also fully understands the needs of the reader and writes in a style that addresses this, with a reassuring warmth to her accessible and informative text.”
Emma Tait, Publisher, Headline
“Hollie really is a dream author – she delivers on time, writes with enthusiasm and passion, and is always brimming with ideas. Her style is incredibly engaging and fun to read. I enjoyed working with her very much.”
Sally Rawlings, Editorial Production Manager, Crimson
“A wonderfully talented writer with the added endearing qualities of being a down-to-earth wife and mum who understands and can tap into the real life, day-to-day ups and downs of her readers’ lives – it was this combination of talent, empathy and wit that led us to invite Hollie to write the third in the series of Netmums books, Toddling to Ten. The fact that we subsequently asked her to write five more is testament to how highly we rate her. She’s an all-round professional. I would recommend her 100%.”
Siobhan Freegard, Founder and Director, Netmums
